Being free from fixation, is generosity,
Being free from abiding, is discipline,
Being free from guarding, is patience,
Being free from effort, is diligence,
Being free from focus, is meditation,
Being free from opinions, is wisdom.—from the Sutra of the Special Request
The essence of six paramitas are here described as fruition or perfected – being actual paramitas, totally free of any grasping. Before that, we are only training in the paramitas, being on the path. What defines the paramitas, is being free from clinging to the three spheres of doer, action and receiver.
It becomes paramita when you are free from thinking:
“I’m giving or doing this for you”,
while still giving.
Then you might think: “how can I give like that, when I notice how attached I’m while giving?” That’s why it’s so important to know the difference between path and fruition – training and final result. Being very result oriented, doesn’t work well here. The point is to watch your mind and see how it works while in action, and then let go of all hope for reward.
To see the benefit of being free from grasping,
Is quite difficult to grasp …
Pun intended 😉
